Sudanese traders have resumed business in Wau Town following the closure of shops last Friday for fear of violent protests.
On Friday morning, Sudanese traders closed their shops when some youth staged a violent protest, targeting them over the killing of their compatriots in Sudan’s Wad Medani, the capital of Al Jazirrah State, by the Sudanese army.
Addressing the media in Wau on Tuesday, town Mayor Denis William Taban confirmed the reopening of the shops and vowed to take full charge of security of the Sudanese traders.
Taban said 80 percent of the shops had reopened.
“We want to tell the residents of Wau Town that the security situation is stable and about 80 percent of the shops are open,” said Taban.
“We want to thank the Sudanese traders who have heard the voice of the State Government and their belief in the Western Bahr el-Ghazal State to reopen their shops,” he said.
“We want to assure them that their safety and the security of their properties is in the hands of the State Government and the Wau Municipality administration,” he added.
At least 40 youth, including soldiers, remain in detention following the protests.
