Sudanese traders in Yambio, Western Equatoria State, closed their businesses on Tuesday to mourn a Sudanese colleague who was killed in Maridi County last week.
Speaking to Radio Tamazuj this afternoon, Osman Yusuf, the head of the Sudanese community in Yambio, explained that the closure was to honor the deceased and prepare for his funeral. “Tomorrow, we will reopen all shops. We want to assure everyone that the situation is calm and there is no security threat,” he said.
Yusuf clarified that the deceased was a long-time trader in Yambio who had traveled to Maridi for business. He also served as an Imam at the Maridi mosque. “He was shot around 8 p.m. in Maridi. This morning, we received news of his death, and we are mourning this loss,” he added.
The community leader thanked the Western Equatoria State government for its efforts in maintaining peace during this difficult time. “We appreciate the authorities for ensuring no one has been harmed, beaten, or robbed,” Yusuf said.
The market closures caused widespread concern among Yambio residents on Tuesday morning, with many fearing potential violence.
Boda-boda rider Viva Drogba described the situation: “People were running everywhere, and some shops were closed while others remained open. We urge the state government to inform us through the radio about such situations to prevent fear.”
Another rider, Taban B from Park Anzara, expressed concern that the incident could lead to panic-related injuries and further disruptions. “Many people are now going hungry because shops are closed, and the fear of insecurity is spreading,” he said.
The Mayor of Yambio Town Municipality, John Singira, reassured the public that the situation in Yambio remains stable. He also confirmed that a suspect linked to the Maridi incident had been arrested.
“Our Sudanese traders closed their markets due to the incident in Maridi, but the situation is now calm,” Singira said. “The perpetrator is in custody, and we are protecting his identity to avoid escalating tensions. I urge everyone to remain
He pointed out that the markets in Yambio are expected to reopen on Wednesday following the completion of funeral arrangements.
