A group of criminals shot and killed a Sudanese trader in South Sudan’s Maridi State Sunday, police said.

The incident occurred at Lalama, a village west of Maridi County.

Clement Double-Seven, a police officer at the Criminal Investigation Department (CID), said that 45-year-old Sadig Abdel-Wahab, who used to transport sugarcane from Maridi to Wau State, was shot while loading sugarcanes onto a lorry.

He explained that the gunmen took from the deceased 250 SSP, 120 liters of diesel and a battery.

The officer further said investigations into the incident are underway, urging the deceased’s family and Sudanese community to remain calm.

The Maridi County commissioner, Daniel Owudada condemned the killing, saying people should report insecurity matters to police.

He also cautioned citizens against taking the law into their hands, warning of tough measures against whoever commits the offence.

“If you have any problem, come to the authorities instead of killing someone,” said Owudada.

Meanwhile, the county official expressed concerns over the increasing cases of insecurity in the county, calling on citizens to cooperate with police authorities and provide information to help crackdown on criminals.
