More than 50 Sudanese activists including political figures on Thursday signed a petition denouncing deteriorating humanitarian conditions of war prisoners in Sudan, demanding their immediate release.

In a petition seen by Radio Tamazuj, the activists said that some prisoners of war died inside the prison due to bad treatment. The rights group further said two prisoners of war identified as Mustafa Adam and Mohammed Musa are currently suffering from tuberculosis infection inside the prison.

The rights defenders accused the Khartoum government of withholding primary healthcare services provided to the prisoners of war. They called on the government to release the prisoners for the sake of peace and inclusive dialogue across the country.

The activists also urged humanitarian organizations to improve the conditions of the prisoners affiliated either to the government or the armed opposition group.

The third Geneva Convention provides for a wide range of protection for prisoners of war.
