Civilians in Sudan have begun a civil disobedience campaign protesting recent economic measures taken by the government.
The streets of Khartoum were empty on Sunday, some shops were closed, and many families asked their children to stay home from school. Security forces were deployed on the main streets to avoid any protests, but there did not appear to be large disturbances.
Last week several activists, civil society organizations, and political parties called for civil disobedience to protest a recent decision to cut back on fuel subsidies, calling on citizens to pressure the government to reverse its decision.
Speaking to Radio Tamazuj, Satti al-Haj, secretary general of democratic union party said there has been a massive response from citizens to the civil disobedience.
