Sudanese police have arrested 20 South Sudanese women and demolished more than 600 shelters in a settlement west of Khartoum over alleged alcohol brewing, a rights activist reports.
Deng Wol, a member of An Nas Center for Legal Aid in Khartoum, told Radio Tamazuj that the raid came Monday in a camp for South Sudanese refugees. He said the women were accused of brewing marissa, a traditional drink made from dates and sorghum.
The families that had their shelters destroyed are now living in the open air, he said.
Last week police conducted a similar raid, arresting 18 women and burning down more than 800 shelters on the outskirts of Khartoum.
