Sudanese security personnel arrested 18 leaders of an opposition group on Saturday, a spokesman for the coalition said, as anti-government protests continue.
Farouk Abu Issa, head of the opposition National Consensus Forces (NCf), was among those arrested after a meeting held in the Sudanese capital’s twin city of Omdurman. NCF is one of the main opposition groups in Sudan.
Sadiq Youssef, a spokesman of the coalition, told Radio Tamazuj on Saturday that Farouk Abu Issa was in poor health condition and had been taken to Omdurman Hospital after his detention.
He added that other detainees were taken to an unknown location by security officials. Youssef called for the immediate release of the opposition leaders.
The opposition official further said the ongoing anti-government protests in the country in which people were killed aims to overthrow the NCP-led government.
“What happened shows that the government fears the ongoing demonstrations,” he said.
Sudanese government officials could not immediately be reached for comment.
The arrests came on the fourth day of protests sparked by a hike in bread and fuel prices in the country.
