Sudanese official denies Amnesty report on use of chemical weapons in Darfur

Sudan’s Ambassador to the United Nations Omer Dahab Fadl Mohamed says the Amnesty report was unfounded and that his government does not have any type of chemical weapons.

In a statement, the Sudanese diplomat said that the allegations of use of chemical weapons by Sudanese Armed Forces in Darfur are fabricated.

“The ultimate objective of such wild accusation, is to steer confusion in the on-going processes aimed at deepening peace and stability and enhancing economic development and social cohesion in Sudan," he was quoted as saying.

In a report released on Thursday, Amnesty International said that about 250 people children died as a result of exposure to the chemical weapons agents in the Jebel Marra area in the Darfur region since January.

The rights group pointed out that its investigation was based on satellite imagery and more than 200 interviews, saying the most recent attack took place on 9 September.

Tirana Hassan, Amnesty's Director of Crisis Research said that the use of chemical weapons is a war crime. He added that evidence they have gathered is credible and portrays a government that is intent on directing attacks against the civilian population in Darfur without any fear of international retribution.
