A senior Sudanese official says the government is ready to reach an understanding with the armed movements for peace and stability in the country, but a rebel spokesman has downplayed the conciliatory remarks.

The official in charge of the Darfur file, Amin Hassan Omer said on Sunday they are ready to reach understanding with the armed movements that are fighting the government and that they are awaiting the outcomes of the expected meeting between the Qatar mediator with Justice and Equality Movement and Sudan Liberation Movement later this month.

Meanwhile, the spokesperson of the Justice and Equality Movement (JEM) Jibril Adam Bilal downplayed this statement, describing the government as not serious to reach a comprehensive solution to the Sudanese crisis.

He reiterated in an interview with Radio Tamazuj their support to the Qatar mediator to join the African Union High Implementation Panel (AUHIP) led by former South Africa President Thabo Mbeki.

“It is obvious that the government is not ready to comprehensive peace in Sudan in spite of the outcomes of the meeting,” Bilal said of the Qatar meeting.

Bilal claimed that the solution to the Sudanese crisis is either the success of the Sudanese uprising and the change of the regime or a comprehensive political settlement that does not give the ruling party overall control.
