Sudanese Doctors: Health system collapse endangers lives

The Sudan Doctors Syndicate’s preliminary committee has issued a warning that the breakdown of Sudan’s health system poses a severe threat to the lives of thousands of children and pregnant women.

The Sudan Doctors Syndicate’s preliminary committee has issued a warning that the breakdown of Sudan’s health system poses a severe threat to the lives of thousands of children and pregnant women.

According to a statement from the Sudanese Medical Syndicate obtained by Radio Tamazuj, the April 15 war has led to the world’s largest child displacement crisis, with over 3.5 Sudanese children forcibly displaced.

The report highlights the expectation of 45,000 births this year in conflict-ridden areas of Sudan, where the health sector has been decimated. It also raises concerns about the well-being of 30 children expected to be born in the next three months due to a lack of accessible healthcare.

The report reveals that 176,000 pregnant women in Sudan are facing dire conditions marked by hunger, thirst, disease, and a lack of healthcare.

Dr. Adiba Ibrahim Al-Sayed, a member of the Medical Syndicate’s specialist sub-committee, emphasized to Radio Tamazuj that the collapse of Sudan’s health system has reached an irreparable state, with the conditions of patients becoming perilous. She underscored that the war has obliterated the health infrastructure, resulting in shortages of medicine and healthcare.

Conflict between the Sudanese army and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) erupted on April 15, 2023. While fighting has been chiefly concentrated in the country’s capital, Khartoum, the conflict has impacted other regions. In Darfur, mass killings and displacement have led to reports of ethnic cleansing.

Over 12,000 people have been killed, with about 5.9 million displaced within the country, making it the largest internal displacement crisis globally. More than 7.2 million people have fled their homes, taking refuge inside and outside the country.
