World Health Organization (WHO) expressed on Wednesday its concerns over attacks targeting health facilities in Sudan, calling for the protection of hospitals.
“WHO is concerned about continued attacks on and in the vicinity of hospitals in Sudan, where access to health care is already so limited,” WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said on X.
He pointed out that seven people were killed and 37 others injured in an attack near Al-Naw Hospital on Tuesday.
Emphasizing the immense suffering of civilians in Sudan, Ghebreyesus called for an immediate ceasefire and the protection of hospitals.
“Peace is the best medicine,” he said.
Sudan’s Health Ministry announced that the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) carried out an artillery attack on Al-Naw Hospital in the Omdurman area, west of the capital Khartoum, killing six people.
War in Sudan
In April 2023, a power struggle between the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) and the army erupted into armed confrontations. All initiatives aimed at ending the war have so far failed.
The war is causing untold human misery, with tens of thousands killed and millions uprooted from their homes.
Famine was declared in North Darfur in August 2024, and the UN has warned that the hunger crisis could be one of the worst in modern history.
