The Ministry of Health in Sudan’s West Darfur State has initiated a routine vaccination campaign against diseases including polio, tuberculosis, pneumococcal disease, meningococcal disease, yellow fever, cough, and tetanus for pregnant mothers at the new immunization headquarters.
This campaign, which began on October 15 and continues until December, is focused on vaccinating 75,000 children under the age of one year in all localities and women of reproductive age between 18-45.
Mubarak Adam Abakar, the director of immunization in El Geneina city, told Radio Tamazuj on Friday that the vaccines were dispatched to the state and its localities from the central unit, which had received them from joint forces last week. The vaccines were then distributed to various neighborhoods to ensure broad access.
Abakar expressed gratitude to popular initiatives, organizations, and the regional government for their support in reviving immunization services after the collapse of healthcare institutions due to the conflict in Sudan, particularly in El Geneina.
He appealed to families and mothers to comply with the vaccination schedule to safeguard the health of both mother and child.
More than six months of war in Sudan have created a deepening health crisis that could lead to hundreds — if not thousands — of more deaths if the fighting does not end.
