Sudan VP: ‘No power by force’

Sudan’s Second Vice President, Dr Al-Haj Adam Yusuf has condemned the position of opposition political parties in his country, stating that the Sudan government will not accept opposition parties working hand-in-glove armed rebels opposed to the regime.

Dr Yusuf assured that elections are the only way to achieve power, vowing that “there will be no political party or armed group that will able to assume power by force unless by means of through democratic elections”.

Speaking at the convention of the United Umma Party (UUP), the Vice President attacked Sudanese opposition forces saying: “they are active in order to compete with the government and do not have any clear programme for the country’s renaissance”.

Dr Yusuf further reiterated the Sudan government’s call for the opposition parties and armed rebel movements to join the government in the process of drafting Sudan’s permanent Constitution.

However, Dr Kamal Omer, a leader of the Popular Congress Party (PCP) and the head of information committee of the Sudan opposition parties’ coalition dismissed the Vice President’s statement and described the Sudan government as “a system which has lost its credibility and legality”.

Dr Omer: “On the issue of participation in the process of constitutional review, we said that we will not be part of that process as we consider the Khartoum regime as a system which has lost its constitutional legality.”

He also stressed the continuation of the National Consensus Forces in the ‘100-day’ programme to overthrow the regime in Khartoum.
