Teachers in Abu Jabra Locality in Sudan’s East Darfur state went on strike on Monday claiming dues from the state finance ministry. About 21 schools are affected as teachers demand their April salary.

Speaking to Radio Tamazuj on Tuesday, several teachers expressed resentment at the government for the delay in paying teacher salaries, while some neighbouring localities have supposedly received their salaries without delay.

Adam Osman, a headmaster at Aliet Primary School, said salaries have delayed for more than one month, whereas teachers in the neighbouring localities were paid by the government.

He noted the Abu Jabra Locality Teachers Union had issued a statement announcing the strike in over 21 schools in the area. The teachers union has already notified the state union about the matter, but without positive response so far, according to Osman.

The teacher called on the state finance ministry to pay salaries, so that the strike does not affect education in the locality.
