Sudan’s Interior Ministry has started the registration process of South Sudanese refugees at Jebel Aulia, Andalus, and Soba as well as El Shajera camps on the outskirts of the Sudanese capital Khartoum.
Sika Hussein, Andalus camp leader, told Radio Tamazuj that the issuance of the identification cards for South Sudanese nationals in Khartoum has officially begun. He further said the card bears the name and profession of the card holder.
Hussein pointed out that the card allows the South Sudanese to move freely.
The camp leader said that the Andalus camp is currently accommodating nearly 1,680 stranded returnees. He added that the people are living in open areas without any services given to them.
In December last year, the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) signed a memorandum of understanding with the interior ministry to allow regularising the status of about 500,000 South Sudanese residing in Sudan including over 350,000 who had never returned to their areas of origin after the independence of South Sudan.
