Sudan sends military reinforcements to al-Mazmum, Sennar over unrest

Sudanese government sources in al-Mazmum area in Sudan’s Sennar state revealed that the government has sent military reinforcements to the area and withdrew police forces following bloody incidents that took place in the area last week between nomads who returned from South Sudan and the police.

The nomads have been demanding to be resettled in new lands after the independence of South Sudan.

A source said the governor of Sennar visited Kokari area to solve the crisis but expected that there will be no solution with the nomad tribes after the arrival of the military reinforcements to the area.

Meanwhile, the nomads are stressing on the implementation of the decision of the Sudanese president Omer al Bashir that allows for their resettlement.

Salah Ahmed al Noor, an MP from Sinja area presented a motion in the national parliament to summon the minister of interior over the incidents in the area.

Speaking to the press he said the situation is tense and could explode at any time, noting that 15 farms have been burnt and several agricultural equipments have been looted during the incidents.

For his part, Yusuf Ahmed Aburuf, chief of the Rufaa al Hawa and the groups of nomadic tribes that returned from South Sudan said the implementation of the Sudanese president’s decision of their resettlement is the only way forward.

He confirmed that the police have been withdrawn from the area but denied knowledge about the military reinforcement.

He blamed other farmers and the members of the national parliament representing Sinja for exploiting the situation by brining the police which he said have attacked the nomads.
