Sudan security agents stop SCP party leader from traveling

Ibrahim al-Sheikh, the leader of the opposition Sudanese Congress Party (SCP), was blocked by security agents at Khartoum International Airport from traveling abroad and his passport was confiscated.

He said he obtained an exit visa from the police and that his passport was stamped after fulfilling all the conditions and procedures for travelling abroad.

“But security agents claim that I pose a threat to national security, that’s why I was prevented from traveling,” he said.

The opposition leader emphasized the need to resist tyranny until it is overthrown.

Al-Sheikh was detained in his hometown En Nahud in June for over three months after publicly criticizing the Rapid Support Forces, a militia managed by the country’s intelligence service.

He accused the militia of committing abuses against civilians. Sudan’s President Omar al Bashir ordered the release of the jailed leader last September.
