An alliance of Sudanese opposition political parties says security agents have barred two leading opposition figures from leaving the country and confiscated their passports.

In a statement, the alliance said security personnel blocked chairman of the Sudanese Congress Party Ibrahim al-Sheikh and Sidiq Yusuf, a high-level member of the same party from boarding a flight on Saturday from Khartoum International Airport.

“The regime is proving that it wants to survive by relying every day on repressive laws and the security services; it is not qualified to manage any dialogue that can lead to a peaceful democratic transformation,” reads the statement.

The opposition group confirmed their commitment to confront the government with various peaceful means of resistance in order to overthrow it and then cross to a dawn of freedom, justice and peace.

For his part, Abdul Gayom Badur, Secretary-General of the Sudanese Congress party, confirmed in a press statement that the security agents stopped the two opposition figures from leaving the country. Badur said the two men were scheduled to meet with other opposition figures in Cairo and Paris.
