Sudan’s Press and Publications Prosecution Office on Thursday launched investigations into al-Maidan newspaper’s chief editor Madeeha Abdallah and journalist Mohamed Al Fateh Yusuf Himma.

The Journalist’s Network for Human Rights (JHR) said in a statement that the investigation comes after the newspaper published a story on land corruption in Khartoum State last month.

Madeeha and Mohamed face charges under articles 66 (publication of a false story) and 159 (defamation under the Sudanese criminal law).

Al-Maidan, which is a publication of the Sudanese Communist Party, has already been censored, confiscated, and suspended at various times by security agents.
