The Sudanese parliament has described the government move to increase the price of cooking gas by 200% as “unjustified.”

This came after a meeting between the speaker of parliament and the state minister of petroleum Badr al-Dain Mahmoud and minister of finance.

In a statement to the press after the meeting, the chairperson of petroleum and mining committee in the parliament Hayat al-Mahi said the finance minister promised to present the parliament’s views on the issue to the concerned authorities.

The ministry of finance has recently lifted subsides on oil products, which resulted in complaints by citizens.

The Sudanese government raised punishments for rioters ahead of the move, a move some say was to preempt potential protests.
