Sudan's unions and opposition groups called for more protests in the country after Thursday’s deadly demonstrations in the capital.
On Thursday, at least two people were killed by security personnel after protesters tried to march on the presidential palace.
Mohamed Asbat, spokesman of the Sudanese Professionals Association, told Radio Tamazuj this morning that the group called for a march on parliament in Khartoum's twin city of Omdurman on Sunday.
He pointed out that the protest organizers also called for anti-government demonstrations on 22 January in Al-Haj Yusuf and Um Badda areas. “Also, there will be nationwide protests on 24 January,” Mohamed said.
The association includes dozens of sub-groups representing doctors, teachers, engineers, journalists and other professionals in Sudan.
Mohamed said teachers decided to launch a week-long strike on Sunday in support of the ongoing protests.
The committee of Sudanese doctors, Mohamed said, announced a strike at certain hospitals Thursday after their colleague was killed during protests in the capital.
The committee decided to withdraw all doctors from hospitals affiliated with military institutions and owned by members of the ruling National Congress Party, he said.
