The fourth General Convention of Sudan’s National Congress Party (NCP) is set to begin in Khartoum today.
The convention will last until 25 October and is expected to endorse President Omar al-Bashir as chairman of the NCP for another five years.
The NCP’s shura council recently nominated al-Bashir as their candidate for Sudan’s 2015 presidential elections.
Deputy NCP chairman Ibrahim Ghandour said the convention will include participation from forty eight friendly countries.
“Representatives of parties from China, Russia, Azerbaijan, Uzbekistan, Korea, India, Turkey, Pakistan, Malaysia, Iran, Egypt, Tunis, Morocco, Algeria, Libya, Mauritania, Yemen, Jordan, UK, Austria, and several African neighbours will take part in the event,” he said.
“This participation confirms NCP’s wide and strong relations at international and regional levels,” Ghandour added.
South Sudan’s ruling Sudan People’s Liberation Movement party and South Sudan’s NCP were also among the invited to attend the event.
The opening session will be addressed by President Omar al-Bashir and several other invited dignitaries.
