The head of Sudan's transitional military council arrived Monday in Juba, where he met President Salva Kiir, South Sudan’s presidency said.
General Abdel Fattah al-Burhan was on his first trip to South Sudan since taking power in April following the ouster of president Omar al-Bashir after months of anti-government demonstrations.
Al-Burhan was received at the Juba airport by President Salva Kiir and a number of government officials.
Al-Burhan’s visit to Juba comes ahead of a strike called by organizers of the protests in Sudan on Tuesday and Wednesday to demand the military council hand over power to a civilian administration.
Thousands of protesters remain at the sit-in outside the military headquarters in Khartoum to demand the departure of the generals who seized power after ousting Omar Bashir.
The top army generals are tasked with running the country's affairs following the removal of former President Omar al-Bashir.
South Sudan government has recently voiced support for Sudan's ruling military council.
