Members of the Sudanese Bar Association said they are following up on an appeal presented to the Justice Ministry for the release of the Sudanese opposition National Consensus Force figure Farouk Abu Issa and Sudan Human Rights Monitor President Amin Mekki Madeni, who are still in detention in Khartoum.
Sudanese security forces in December detained Abu Issa, Mekki Madeni, and Farah Agar after returning to Khartoum from Ethiopia where they had signed the “Sudan Appeal” with armed rebel groups demanding end of conflict and democratic transition.
El Tayib Haroun, head of Sudanese Bar Association, told Radio Tamazuj that they are still following up on the petition presented recently by a legal team to the ministry requesting either to release the detainees or take them to the court.
“We met the minister of Justice Mohamed Bushara Dosa, so we explained our moral position on the issue of the detainees,” he said.
The lawyer further said they are abiding by the law and constitution to defend the political detainees, while dismissing claims that the detainees rejected any legal aid from the Bar Association.
“We paid a visit to the detainees recently and families of Abu Issa and Madeni appreciated the visit,” he said.
Over the last two days, the Justice Minister Mohamed Bushara Dosa said in a press statement that they are still studying the appeal presented by the Bar Association recently and that they will reply to it soon.
