Sudan’s Ministry of Higher Education has issued a circular cancelling the decision to exempt Darfur students at universities and high learning institutions from payment of tuition frees.
Free enrolment of students from Darfur was enshrined in the Abuja and Doha peace agreements on Darfur, but the provision was later enforced in a deal between Darfur Regional Authority and the ministry.
Police forces were deployed near several universities across the capital Khartoum to deal with any reaction from the students after dozens of students at the Islamic University of Omdurman had staged a sit-in over the matter.
Meanwhile, dozens of Darfur students at Shambat campus of the University of Khartoum are still protesting after the university management refused to register them last week.
