Sudan’s Council of Ministers denies decision to transfer University of Khartoum

Sudan’s Council of Ministers in its regular meeting chaired by President Omer al-Bashir on Thursday said that no decision has been made to transfer the University of Khartoum from its current location.

This came after the Council of Ministers heard a report of the Minister of Higher Education and Scientific Research on the call of the University of Khartoum for funding to its projects at Soba area, which was erroneously considered by some people as referring to the intention to transfer the university from its location and to lease out its former premises for tourism purposes.

The spokesman of the Council of Ministers, Dr. Omer Mohamed Salih, said that the transfer of the University of Khartoum to another location or to deal in its buildings has never been a subject of discussion at meetings of the Council of Ministers or at the meeting that was held between the Sudanese Vice President and the Council of the University of Khartoum.

Meanwhile, students of University of Khartoum have continued their protests against the transfer of the University Wednesday in its central campus, Shambat and Faculty of Nursing in the east of Khartoum.

A number of students were arrested during the protests while over 35 were wounded and taken to Bahri Hospital and other private hospitals following the intervention of the police with tear gas and rubber bullets.

Students told Radio Tamazuj that protests have continued until Thursday.
