The head of Sudan’s ruling sovereign council has arrived in Juba to witness the swearing-in of the vice presidents at the presidential palace today.
Ethiopia’s Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed and Uganda’s President Yoweri Museveni are also expected to arrive.
Sudan’s state news agency (SUNA) reported that Gen. Abdel Fattah al-Burhan has arrived in Juba to attend the swearing-in ceremony of the newly appointed vice presidents of South Sudan.
The Sudanese leader was received at Juba International Airport by South Sudan’s presidential advisor on national security affairs, Tut Gatluak Manime.
South Sudan’s President Salva Kiir on Friday night appointed opposition leader Riek Machar as the country’s first vice president, a day after the two principles agreed to form a unity government.
Machar is due to take the oath of office in the capital Juba today, alongside three other vice presidents appointed by President Salva Kiir as per the 2018 peace deal.
Those appointed vice presidents include James Wani Igga, Taban Deng Gai and Rebecca Nyandeng Garang. The fourth vice president position for the South Sudan Opposition Alliance (SSOA) is still vacant.
Kiir also appointed Mayiik Ayii Deng as minister of presidential affairs and Tut Gatluak as national security advisor.
