Sudan’s President Omar al-Bashir is scheduled to visit China today despite an International Criminal Court indictment for alleged war crimes in Darfur, the foreign ministry announced Sunday.
Ali al-Sadiq, spokesperson of the foreign ministry, said in a press statement that al-Bashir will attend celebrations marking Japan’s defeat in World War II and meet Chinese President Xi Jinping.
“President Bashir will travel to China on Monday on a four-day visit,” Ali told reporters in Khartoum yesterday.
In June, a South African court ordered authorities to stop Sudan’s Bashir from leaving the country when he attended an African Union summit. However, he was allowed to leave.
The South African government claimed al-Bashir had immunity from arrest because he was attending an AU summit.
