Sudan’s President Omar al-Bashir, wanted on genocide charges by the International Criminal Court, arrived in Morocco late on Thursday for a private visit.
The Sudanese leader was accompanied by ministers and other senior Sudanese officials, according to the Le360 news site.
The trip, announced last week in Sudanese media outlets, has angered rights groups in Morocco, who called on their authorities to cancel the visit.
President Bashir is wanted by the ICC for genocide, war crimes and crimes against humanity, charges he denies.
The United Nations Security Council requested the ICC in 2005 to investigate the crimes in the Darfur region, where at least 300,000 people have been killed and 2.5 million displaced, according to UN figures.
Despite the ICC’s pursuit of the Sudanese president, President Bashir continues to travel to various countries with impunity.
