Sudan’s AJOC accuses some Misseriya leaders of corruption

Sudan’s co-chair of the Abyei Joint Oversight Committee (AJOC) al-Khair al-Fahim announced that nearly 40 million Sudanese pounds earmarked for the Abyei Development Assessment Fund have been misappropriated.

This revelation came during a speech at Zawada Hall in Khartoum about the recent incidents in the Abyei area. He noted an audit committee was set up to look into the misappropriated funds.

Al-Khair, who himself is Misseriya, outright accused some leaders of the Misseriya tribe of implementing a foreign agenda and hindering the development in northern Abyei.

During the meeting some influential Misseriya tribal leaders were also accused of plotting to stir up sedition in the area, notably Mohamed Abdullah Wad Abuk, Hamam Abdul El Jalil and Hamad Al Dodo.

He also reaffirmed that AJOC will not compromise the rights of the Misseriya  tribe that were stipulated in the terms of the Comprehensive Peace Agreement signed in 2005.

For their part, the attendees hailed the head of the committee for his firm stance on the issue of Abyei; leaders of the Misseriya Humr called for annexation of Abyei to West Kordofan State.

In spite of the Misseriya activism on the issue, Sudan’s president recently has said that border disputes with South Sudan will be suspended to allow the southern government to focus on ending the internal crisis in the country.
