Sudan’s Abyei co-chair says security stable in disputed area

Sudan’s co-chair of the Abyei Joint Oversight Committee (AJOC) Hassan Ali Nemir claimed that the security situation is stable in the contested area of Abyei.

In a press statement to the Sudanese Media Centre (SMC), Hassan said they were no complaints received by UNISFA in Abyei recently.

Ali Nemir hails from the Misseriya tribe. The other AJOC co-chair is based in Juba. The Misseriya leader claimed there was no tensions between the Misseriya and Ngok Dinka tribes in the area.

Members of the Ngok Dinka people have recently accused the United Nations Interim Security Force for Abyei (UNISFA) for failing to protect them from Misseriya militia in remote villages.

UNISFA’s Force spokesman Daniel Adekera said the mission it responsible for the provision of security to citizens in the area. He called on citizens to cooperate with the mission in its endeavour to carry out its mandate effectively.
