Sudan’s Abu Issa released from jail

Opposition leader Farouk Abu Issa has been released after more than four months in jail in Sudan’s capital Khartoum.

Opposition leader Farouk Abu Issa has been released after more than four months in jail in Sudan’s capital Khartoum.

He had signed the “Sudan Call” document with armed opposition movements last December in Ethiopia’s capital Addis Ababa and was arrested on arrival at the Khartoum airport upon his return.

A member of the family told Radio Tamazuj that he was informed he was released today but did not arrive home yet.

Abu Issa had been standing trial at a special ‘terrorism’ court for undermining the constitutional order and waging war against the state, among other charges. At a hearing on Monday the court said they would be hearing from 17 prosecution witnesses.

One of the prosecution’s expert witnesses was politician Rabie Abdelati, a leader of the ruling National Congress Party.

Meanwhile, according to a political source in Khartoum, detained civil society leader Amin Maki Medani has also been released.
