Lagawa Locality in Sudan’s West Kordofan state is experiencing rising prices of consumer goods at the market, owing to restriction on the traders and goods along the routes connecting the locality to neighbouring cities.
Traders have noted that consumer goods especially onions, cooking oil and sugar have dramatically risen in price.
“A sack of sugar rose from 270 SDG to 310 SDG, and a drum of cooking oil reached from 280 SDG to SDG 300 SDG. A bag of onions rose from 140 SDG to 350 SDG,” a local resident explained.
Traders attributed the problem to restrictions on the traders by the Sudanese security service, besides confiscation of goods by the Sudan Armed Forces in the town and along the Dilling-Kadugli route.
Restrictions on the goods at the market were imposed by the local authorities to thwart smuggling of goods to the Sudan People’s Liberation Army-North by sympathisers in Lagawa Locality. The restrictions are often used as a pretext to seize goods.
