Abu Jabra Locality in Sudan’s East Darfur state is experiencing rising prices of consumer goods and fuel, owing to insecurity along the routes connecting the locality to larger cities.

Traders have noted that consumer goods especially sorghum, cooking oil, sugar and onion have dramatically risen in price at the market.

“A sack of sorghum rose from 300 SDG to 600 SDG, a small bushel of sorghum reached SDG 25 SDG, and a sack of sorghu rose from 270 to 350 SSP,” a local resident explained.

He added that a sack of onions reached 300 SDG while a gallon of diesel has risen dramatically from 80 SDG to 170.

Traders attributed the problem to poor road conditions and insecurity on roads to the state capital Ed Daein town and to other states. The area has seen clashes between the Arab nomadic Rizeigat and Ma’alia tribes.
