The family of Blue Nile politician Farah Agar who is still in detention are complaining that he recently underwent a medical operation without their knowledge and without their consent.

Sudanese security forces in December picked up Agar along with the head of the opposition National Consensus Forces Farouk Abu Issa and Sudan Human Rights Monitor President Amin Mekki Madeni after their return to Khartoum from Ethiopia where they signed the “Sudan Appeal” declaration.

In a statement obtained by Radio Tamazuj, the family members said they were perplexed after they had visited their son at El Amal Hospital where they found him drugged and allegedly had undergone the operation without any prior medical check-up.

Agar’s family had previously asked the security service to allow him to undergo an eye surgery at their own expense, but they wanted to select the ophthalmologists whom he trusts. This request was denied and he was instead operated at the Al-Amal hospital which belongs to the National Intelligence and Security Service (NISS).

The family had claimed that Agar’s vision was negatively affected by continuous lighting at the Kober prison in Khartoum north.

Agar is a former member of the ruling party.
