A court in Madani in Sudan’s el Gezira state sentenced a member of the opposition Sudanese Congress Party (SCP) to death over allegedly inciting violence last year.
Yassin Mohamed Abaker, a mass communications student in his last year at the University of el Gezira, is accused of involvement in an incident where a member of the ruling National Congress Party was killed on the university compound.
Abaker was charged under Article 130 of the Sudanese penal code.
Observers say it is the first of its kind for a Sudanese court to impose capital punishment on a student in connection with violence at a university.
SCP leaders said they will oppose by all means what they termed as an “unacceptable ruling.”
The opposition party threatened to use media and political protests at Sudanese universities rather than following legal procedures as usual.
