Sudan opposition alliance opposes construction of dams

An alliance of Sudanese opposition political parties said it opposes construction of dams in the northern part of Sudan.

In a statement, the opposition alliance urged all Sudanese communities to unite their ranks to fight for dignity in what it termed as a “decisive battle”. The opposition group confirmed that it supports those who protested to protect their land rights.

According to the Dams Opponents Committee, the construction of dams in the area would destroy 170 villages and over 500 archaeological sites, besides the displacement of over 100,000 families.

Sudan’s parliament recently endorsed a framework agreement signed with Saudi Arabia to build three dams – al-Sharik, Kajbar and the Dal, despite objections from some of the local population.

Darfur referendum

Separately, the opposition alliance also criticized the move by the Khartoum government to conduct a popular referendum for Darfur in April.

“The referendum is not a priority for the people of Darfur who are eager to see that the ongoing war comes to an end so humanitarian aid can be provided,” reads the statement.
