A criminal court in En Nahud town in Sudan’s West Kordofan state yesterday acquitted journalist Aisha El-Samani of charges of photographing military zones in the state.
Aisha was taken by police on Friday 4 July and charged under articles 1926 and 57 for photographing military zones near En Nahud Prison while covering a rally organized by the opposition Sudanese Congress Party. She was released conditionally and returned to Khartoum.
On Wednesday, the court ruling considered En Nahud prison as a public utility and that everybody is allowed to take its photo without any restriction.
Speaking on phone while on her way back to Khartoum, Aisha confirmed her acquittal from all charges levelled against her.
If convicted, she would have been imprisoned for a term not exceeding one year or be fined.
