A Sudanese government delegation arrived in the capital Juba this afternoon to follow up on implementation of the revitalized peace deal.

The delegation is led by Lt. Gen. Mohamed Hamdan Dagalo, known as Hemeti, who serves as deputy head of the Sudan Sovereign Council.

Mohammed Hassan al-Taishi, a member of the Sovereign Council, told reporters in Juba that their visit aims at following up on the implementation of the peace agreement in South Sudan.

Sudan and Uganda are guarantors to the peace accord that seeks to end more than five years of civil war in South Sudan.

Earlier this month, President Salva Kiir and opposition leader Riek Machar delayed the formation of a unity government by 100 days in order to resolve outstanding issues.

Key critical tasks of the peace deal have yet to be implemented, including transitional security arrangements and determination of the number and boundaries of states.

“Sudan is keen to ensure that South Sudan is politically stable, and it is important for the parties to agree within the agreed 100 days,” he said.

Mr. al-Taishi noted that during the visit, the visiting delegation would meet with all parties to the September 2018 peace agreement to expedite the implementation process.

“We think that there are steps towards what was agreed upon,” he said.

Last week, the United Nations Security Council said that the parties to the peace deal in South Sudan have not made substantive progress on implementation of critical tasks.

The UN’s most powerful body threated sanctions against those who threaten the peace, security, or stability of South Sudan.
