Sudan government bans foreign aid groups from entering S Sudanese refugee camps

The Sudanese government has issued a decision banning foreign organizations from entering South Sudanese refugee camps in East Darfur, Blue Nile and West Kordofan States.

In a press conference on Wednesday, Babiker Digna, State Minister of Interior, said that international NGOs are not allowed to work in the refugee camps.

He further said aid assistance will be provided to South Sudan refugees by the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) and indigenous humanitarian organizations.

Dinga pointed out that South Sudanese would only get food and other aid assistance unless they were registered officially as refugees, while confirming the refugee commission’s commitment to help the South Sudanese refugees.

The official revealed that his country is currently accommodating more than 400,000 South Sudanese refugees.

In December 2013, President Omer al-Bashir decided to treat South Sudanese refugees as citizens and rejected to establish any refugee camps. However, earlier this month, the Sudanese government reneged on its previous decision and preferred to treat South Sudanese as foreigners.
