Members of the Governance and Outcomes Committee in Sudan’s ongoing national dialogue have carried out a heated debate on the status of National Intelligence and Security Service (NISS), multiple sources told Radio Tamazuj.
The sources confirmed that most of the committee members except representatives of the ruling National Congress Party (NCP) and Democratic Unionist Party (DUP) led by Jalal al-Digeir said powers of the NISS should be limited to collection of information only.
The two divergent positions were reportedly referred to the General Secretariat of the National Dialogue for resolution. But the committee members unanimously agreed not to dissolve the National Security, saying it may cause serious security implications.
The NSS is granted sweeping powers to arrest, detain, seize property and conduct searches.
