Long queues were seen of shoppers seeking fuel and breads. Speaking to Radio Tamazuj on Tuesday, several citizens expressed discontent about the soaring prices of food items.

Traders attributed the problem to high costs incurred during transportation, loading and uploading of goods as well as heavy taxes levied by the authorities.

The small bushel of sorghum reached 10 SDG, a pound of sugar costs 7 SDG, 1 Kg of Sega flour is 9 SDG, while one bread reached 50 piasters, a local resident explained.

Sources in Lagawa, also a government-held town in the Nuba Mountains, confirmed price hikes there as well. Gas and diesel prices rose and the fare for a bus ticket between Lagawa and Khartoum increased to 180 pounds.
