Fighting between the Sudanese army and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) in Sudan’s long-troubled Darfur region has left massive casualties, according to a local official.

Speaking to Radio Tamazuj on Sunday, the information minister of the Darfur Regional Government, Mustafa Al-Jamil, said the region has turned into a battlefield between the Sudan Armed Forces (SAF) and Rapid Support Forces (RSF).

Al-Jamil revealed that his government was unable to count the number of casualties due to the gravity of the security situation as the battles have extended many areas, making it inaccessible for the government and the aid agencies to provide humanitarian assistance.

He stressed that the humanitarian situation is out of control as more than 600,000 people fled to neighboring Chad, while there are still large influxes of displaced people from Nyala and El Fashir.

“There are more than 600,000 people who have fled to Chad amid extremely difficult circumstances,” Al-Jamil said. “The humanitarian situation is dire. There is a lack of food and medical supplies.”

He pointed out that his government is trying to deliver food and medical supplies from the White Nile State.

The cities of Nyala and El Fashir in Darfur have witnessed heavy fighting between the belligerents in Sudan.
