Sudan: female activists demand al-Mahdi release

A coalition of Sudanese female activists called for the immediate release of the deputy chairperson of the National Umma Party (NUP) Mariam al-Sadiq al-Mahdi and member of the Sudanese Congress Party (SCP) Samia Kiir.

A coalition of Sudanese female activists called for the immediate release of the deputy chairperson of the National Umma Party (NUP) Mariam al-Sadiq al-Mahdi and member of the Sudanese Congress Party (SCP) Samia Kiir.

This call comes in a petition handed to Sudan’s Human Rights Commissioner in Khartoum yesterday.

The protesting women condemned what they termed “repeated detentions” without legal procedures and requested permission to visit En Nahud and Omdurman Prisons.

The restriction of freedoms and the arrest of political party leaders, especially women leaders, are gross violations of the Sudanese laws, norms and the transitional constitution, reads the petition.

On Thursday, at least 16 female protesters were arrested by security agents during demonstrations outside Omdurman Women’s Prison, demanding the release of al-Mahdi.

al-Mahdi was arrested on 12 August upon her arrival from the French capital Paris after signing the Paris Declaration with the Sudanese Revolutionary Forces (SRF), whereas Samia Kiir was arrested under emergency law imposed in West Kordofan state.
