Sudan’s National Elections Commission (NEC) announced they would leave out seven constituencies in South Kordofan State from Monday’s vote due to insecurity.
NEC Chief Mukhtar Al-Asam said in a press conference yesterday that his commission will not conduct elections in seven constituencies in the Nuba Mountains area due to deteriorating security situation.
In late march, Chief-of-Staff of the Sudanese armed opposition SRF Abdel-Aziz Al Hilu announced a plan to sabotage the Sudanese elections scheduled to take place this month.
He reportedly ordered his forces to implement the order to stop the elections in the war torn region.
Meanwhile, an alliance of Sudanese opposition political parties under the Sudan Appeal declaration said it is campaigning to boycott the April elections in line with its stated goal of overthrowing the NCP-led government.
Refugee protest
Separately, a large number of Blue Nile refugees in Maban County in South Sudan’s Upper Nile State staged anti-election protests yesterday.
Samuel Adam, a refugee from Doro, told Radio Tamazuj that they reject the elections plan this month.
The protesters were chanting banners against the Khartoum government and accused the current government of forcibly displacing them from Blue Nile State and Nuba Mountains area.
Adam disclosed that they presented a petition to the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR).
