Sudan election: electoral body extends voting for one hour

Sudan's National Elections Commission (NEC) yesterday extended voting time for one additional hour amid reports of low turnout.

Jalal Eddin Mohamed Ahmed, the NEC's Secretary General, said in a press statement that the voting time was extended from 6:00 to 7:00 pm, without giving justifications for the decision.

Reports of low voter turnout continued across the states on Tuesday, the second of three days of voting.

Radio Tamazuj’s Khartoum correspondent said at Al Zahra centre in Shabiya area in Khartoum north only 135 people were seen voting yesterday. Our correspondent said the ruling party erected tents to monitor the voting process.

Radio Tamazuj saw 10 voters at one of the centers in Shambat Hillah, whereas in Safia there was no any queue at any polling centers.

In Hillah Hamad area several voters said the ink used to mark their fingers disappeared after being washed with water.

Heavy deployment of security forces was seen yesterday morning at the headquarters of opposition the Sudanese Communist Party in Khartoum 2.
