Sudan election: 2 dead as rebels disrupt S Kordofan vote

At least two people have been killed as the SPLA-North rebels in South Kordofan attempt to disrupt Sudan's elections.

Two women were killed and four others wounded in a bombing by the SPLA-N in Hai Talo, a source confirmed. The incident reportedly stirred up fear among citizens.

Several monitors told Radio Tamazuj that voters were reluctant to cast ballots due to the shelling by the rebels.

Radio Tamazuj’s correspondent in Abu Kershola said the polling stations were empty yesterday, with local citizens attributing the problem to insecurity. The Abu Kershola commissioner to hold a meeting with officials from the election committee on the matter.

Polling stations closed

Three polling stations in South Kordofan state were reportedly closed Tuesday after attacks by the rebels.

National Elections Commission spokesperson Al Hadi Mohamed Ahmed said in a press conference yesterday that the rebels took some materials used in the elections.

However, the spokesperson said the government forces repulsed three rebel attacks on Habila constituencies.

“Those three centers were closed after the rebels took some materials,” he said.

Chief-of-staff of the Sudanese armed opposition SRF Abdel-Aziz Al Hilu announced in late March a plan to sabotage the elections. Al Hilu, who is also deputy chairman of the SPLM-N, ordered his forces to implement the order to stop the elections in South Kordofan state.

Meanwhile, in Arengako area, a landmine exploded along the Dilling-Kadugli road yesterday killing at least three people and wounding three others. A source at Gabri area said a group of woman abducted a man securing a polling center.
