The defense team of the head of Sudanese Congress Party (SCP), Ibrahim El Sheikh, who is still in detention in En Nahud town in West Kordofan said they will submit a petition to the chief justice in El Obeid town today.
On 8 June, SCP president Ibrahim El Sheikh was arrested at his home in En Nahud and charged with undermining the constitution, after he had publicly denounced attacks by militias on civilians in Darfur and Kordofan.
The SCP is a minor but very old Sudanese political party.
El Sate El Haj, one of the politician’s defense lawyers, said in a press conference on Sunday they have already prepared a petition to the chief justice in El Obeid town to appoint a judge to investigate into the case of Sheikh Ibrahim. He pointed out that the prosecutor has so far refused to refer the case to a court.
For his part, the head of the Darfur Bar Assocaition Mohamed Abdullah Duma commented that human rights are being violated every day in the state.
“There is something known as Form Six signed by the governor, which can put any person in jail for six months, subject to extension,” he explained.
Duma called for the immediate release of all political detainees, saying the detainees were detained without clear charges.
A group of political and legal activists on Friday travelled from Khartoum to En Nahud in West Kordofan in support of Ibrahim El Sheikh.
The National Advocacy Committee says that about 20 people have been detained on political grounds in the prisons of North and West Kordofan state.
Members of the Advocacy Committee include Maryam El Sadig El Mahdi, deputy chairwoman of the National Umma Party; Siddig Yousif, a leading communist; Mohamed Abdallah El Doma, chairman of the Darfur Bar Association; and El Bagir El Afifi , director of the now closed El Khatim Adlan Centre in Khartoum.
