Sudan: activists to protest Monday for journalist’s release

A coalition of Sudanese activists will protest at the Sudanese Press and Publications Council in Khartoum Monday to demand the immediate release of a detained journalist.

A coalition of Sudanese activists will protest at the Sudanese Press and Publications Council in Khartoum Monday to demand the immediate release of a detained journalist.

El Nur Ahmed El Nur, a journalist working for the London-based Arabic newspaper El Hayat in Khartoum, was arrested Thursday evening after allegedly reporting on the National Electricity Corporation (NEC).

El Nur, who is also working for the El Taghyeer website, was arrested by security agents at 6 p.m. and then referred to Kober Prison the same day.

Monday’s protesters will include members of the Sudanese journalists’ network, rights bodies, and political activists.

A delegation of El Taghyeer newspaper headed by chief editor Imam Muhammad Imam visited the detainee’s house where they met his wife and his daughter.

Delegate Rabah al Sadiq al-Mahdi reassured the family members that they are working tirelessly to ensure El Nur’s release.

The activist said they are communicating with the minister of electricity and other officials, besides an agreement on the need for the wide participation of in the protests.

Al Mahdi said the protest will take place at noon.
