Over 35,000 people, who were forcibly displaced from Bau in Sudan’s Blue Nile State, have recently been forced to relocate to areas on the outskirts of Ed Damazin town and Roseires, a local official said.
Abdel-Ghani Dagis Khalifa, Head of the Ingessina Development Authority, told Radio Tamazuj that the majority of the displaced families are currently living around Roseires and Ed Damazin. He further said that the displaced people are also scattered between neighboring Sennar and Al Gazira States.
The former commissioner of Bau locality noted that the reason for this displacement is unconfirmed. He claimed that the local authorities are carrying out a need-assessment survey. He added that some humanitarian organizations are providing assistance to the displaced families in the area.
He called upon the two warring parties, President Al Bashir’s government and the Sudan People’s Liberation Army-North (SPLA-North) to sign peace.
Previously, Sudan’s Humanitarian Aid Commission (HAC) announced it registered about 2,825 families (about 16,818 people) who moved from Bau locality to Ed Damazin and Roseires localities as of 4 June. The inter-agency assessment in June, following fighting between the Sudan Armed Forces and the SPLA-N in Wad Abok Locality, Blue Nile State, confirmed the displacement of 24,500 people in June. They fled mainly to towns in Bau and El Tadamun localities. This number might have increased during July and the first weeks of August.
